Digital Full-Arch Implant Impressions: the secrets untold

Although intraoral scanners are extremely appreciated by both patients and clinicians, there are still some knots to untie and some critical issues, related for example to the capture of impressions in the completely edentulous patient, for implant-supported full arches. In real, these problems can be largely overcome today, through a deeper knowledge of image acquisition machines and software. It is important for the operator to know the mathematical basis of intraoral scanning, and the concepts of trueness, precision, resolution, tesselletion. The knowledge of the intrinsic accuracy of the machine used, the amount of stitching error, the influence of variables such as operator, patient, environmental conditions, allows to minimize the error in the capture of the full arch implant impression. In this context, the choice of the scanbody becomes crucial, as is the rigorous control of the effective congruence between the mesh or 3D reconstruction of the scanbody, and the library file. The search for congruence with the implant library in the CAD is key, or the result will not be satisfactory. In this lecture, Dr. Francesco Mangano will analyze in detail all the factors determining the capture of a high quality intraoral digital impression, showing clinical cases and experiences supported by the most recent scientific literature. He will then reveal the fundamental secrets to improve results with optical impressions, and will present a series of innovative techniques that allow, today, to easily bypass intraoral scanning errors, through entirely digital or mixed solutions.
