The evolution of ceramics in esthetic implant dentistry

In implant prosthodontics, technique and material selection directly influence clinical outcomes and long-term success. Along with the increasing use of dental implants, a plethora of new technologies and materials, especially ceramics, is entering the market to enhance esthetic results, functional longevity, and precision in a digital workflow. Among the most astonishing evolutions were the developments in implant restorative materials. Questions that arise start with digital impressions: how good are they? What is currently available and how can I keep up with the rapidly changing digital technologies? And how do I, based on patients’ needs, select the proper materials for implant-supported restorations needs when we know that the ones with greater esthetics often have poorer physical properties. This presentation will answer such questions and provide an understanding of fundamental physical, optical, and biologic properties of modern CAD/CAM ceramics to best serve our patients. Based on the current scientific evidence, guidelines for material selection and new technologies for ultimate clinical success in esthetic implant therapy, from single implants and abutment design to fullmouth zirconia reconstructions, will be presented and discussed.

Learning objectives

• Differentiate modern ceramic materials and their indications

• Learn about CAD/CAM technology and its diverse applications in esthetic implant dentistry

• Understand strategies for success with ceramic restorations implants based on the current scientific evidence

• Comprehend clinical guidelines for long-lasting esthetic implant-supported restorations.
